New York Times Bestseller The quest for the American Dream soars to new heights in this coming-of-age story of a young woman and her country.

Living with her aunt in poor, rural Preston, Pennsylvania, thirteen-year-old Ellen Watson loves books and music and is completely oblivious to her own beauty. But her extraordinary looks arouse envy and malice in the female townspeople—and lust in the males. Hired as a housemaid in the palatial home of the village mayor, Ellen soon catches the attention of his son, Jeremy Porter, who captures her heart in turn. He offers to send her to school, and four years later he proposes marriage.

As the years pass, Ellen’s life parallels the hopes, dreams, and fears of a no-longer innocent nation. As America’s enemies gather, Ellen must face her own demons. The wife of the scion of a powerful political family, she has everything she could ever desire security, children, and a successful, adoring husband. But when tragedy rips her life apart, Ellen will be forced to confront some terrible truths about her marriage, her family, and herself.

Played out against the backdrop of early twentieth-century America, Ceremony of the Innocent intertwines Ellen’s personal journey with America’s emergence from the devastation of World War I. It raises vital questions, such as Are we as good as we believe we are? And is faith enough to keep us moving forward even in the face of unimaginable loss?

This was one of the most depressing books I have ever read. While Taylor Caldwell was a prolific and popular writer of her time, this story is terrible. The heroine has no redeeming qualities other than her unwavering belief in the ultimate goodness of people. She is of course repeatedly disappointed, and victimized by the various people in her world. There are no positive characters in this book...Everyone is out for themselves, even children. I found myself very disturbed by the dark and uncharitable world view of this book.

Ceremony of the Innocent A Novel edition by Taylor Caldwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Poor, poor character development, almost plotless, repetitive, and glacial pace. I’ve never read a book where almost ALL the characters were evil, children included. Stunningly ridiculous.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I had read some of Taylor Caldwell’s novels many years ago and had forgotten how great a writer she was. This was not only a book about a woman’s life but about politics in America and the world during the era the main character lived. I recommend it.
Excellently written, but I didn't enjoy all the political narrative of the time. Would be interesting to a political history buff.
Slow-moving dirge slithers mournfully from a woman's impoverished youth to wealthy middle-age. Probably the most depressing thing I've ever read.
I struggled to finish this book. It might appeal to someone interested in political commentary. Otherwise, I see little to recommend it. The book is dark and depressing with no truly likeable characters. It just goes from one sad, depressing, horrible character and situation to another. The author must have had her thesaurus open for every page as the language she used is often obscure and grandiose.
The book certainly held my interest, even if I did find the involved politics and maneuvering, both domestic and international, to be almost hard to follow. Did all that stuff really happen? - I need to take a course in early 19th century politics and governance!
I loved it and hated it. So many of the characters were so evil and deceitful, it was very difficult to read, but so engrossing a tale, it was very difficult to put down! I wanted the book to end so my "misery" could end, but needed to know how Ellen's life turned out. The fact that it was written almost 50 years ago and yet the politics is parallel to today's atmosphere, is quite surprising. I really liked the history that was included.
