With each step Comiski feels the danger and the fascination grow stronger. This is a story of crime and racial strife, but also of courage and endurance, a relentless journey through a kind of deep-delta purgatory. People become bits of flotsam sucked into the whirlpool. This is one of my favorite novels about New Orleans, a town it's easy (no pun intended) to love only despite itself. Conaway does love it, but with no illusions about its underside. A layered and un-put-downable look at the seamier side of New Orleans, well written and authoritative.
Great fun to read!
I have followed Mr. Conaway, it seems, since his first written word. He gets better, richer, more insightful and takes bigger creative risks as the years roll along. New Orleans was never more inviting.
The most exciting book about New Orleans I've ever read. Brilliantly written, the story is a dizzying ride through the city's most irresistible temptations and - always contrasts! - its deepest and darkest corners. Fascination meets danger, thus making the book impossible to put down.
This is a gritty, well-written, headlong plunge into one of the most interesting and corrupt cities anywhere, with all the temptations, smells, violence, good food and passion associated with it. A mystery in a way but mostly a vivid tour de force that doesn't let go of you until you've ridden the beast from beginning to end. There's no better book about New Orleans than this brilliant novel, the original one that made the name, The Big Easy, famous.
I just reread The Big Easy and it is a fine, dramatic story that pictures New Orleans of an earlier time extremely well.
